More on Selling Encyclopedia Britannica

Dick Slater was a Top Encyclopedia Britannica salesman. He got started shortly after moving from Tacoma, Washington to Salt Lake City, Utah. Mother wanted to resettle closer to her family (the Faircloughs--Bertie,father, and Maude Lenora Sage Fairclough, mother). Dick, our father ,(LuAnn, Frances, and Jimmy) had extensive salesman experience and, once he got situated in Salt Lake City, he checked into every "promising" sales position that he could find. One particular newspaper ad caught his eye: "The highest paid book salesman in America worked for E. B. (Encyclopedia Britannica). Why fight us? Join us. No cold canvassing, direct mail leads. Write or see F. B. Harbert, 338 E. 1st So. Salt Lake City". (this ad "borrowed from The Ogden Standard Examiner (page 8, Sept. 6, 1958). F. B. Harbert (Frank) was the regional sales manager for this Western States Region and was operating out of Salt Lake City. Dad was thoroughly trained by Mr Harbert-then assigned to the Far West States region (chiefly Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, and SW Canada). Dad thrived on this opportunity to "explore" these Western Plains areas and did very well sending out "leads", following them up. and "closing" sales. He was very personable and related extremely well with the rural folks (farmers & ranchers--small town folks too) making many friends. Dad met Bill Corcoran (a Bozeman, Montana millionaire) during this period. Bill & my father both were avid racing pigeon (homing pigeons) enthusiasts and became fast friends. Even after leaving the North areas (for Arizona) , my father and Bill remained good friends. Dad really enjoyed his Montana days (except for the bitter cold winters) and never forgot all the "high times" that were part of the time frame that our family spent in Montana. The year 2012 brought the end of the Encyclopedia Britannica salesman as this was the last year that E. B. published a "hard print" bound volume set of "books". Ironically, 2012 was also the year that my father died--of course, he had long retired from selling Encyclopedia Britannica sets by this time and was "re-located" in sunny Phoenix, Arizona.
